- " " If you must wish", he said gruffly " " Wish for something sensible"(Jacobs line 103). This is showing that Sergeant- Major Morris is trying to warn Mr.White. He wants Mr.White to wish carefully.
- Grimace
- The visitor bowed in assent. " "Badly hurt," he said quietly " but he is not in any pain" " (Jacobs lines 200-201). This helps us understand that Herbert is dead. Mr and Mrs. White are upset that their son has died.
- Sympathetic Characters
- He raised his hand. " "I wish my son alive again." " (Jacobs line 283). Mr and Mrs. White want Herbert alive again. They are going to make another wish in hopes that their son will come back/
- Mood
- " "Mrs. White drew back with grimace, but her son taking it, examined it curiously" " (Jacobs line 58-59). This shows Mrs. White is disgusted with the monkey's paw. Mrs. White doesn't trust the monkeys paw.
- “ ‘ It's Herbert! She screamed. It’s Herbert! ‘ ” (Jacobs line 313). This quote from “The Monkey’s Paw” shows that the character is surprised. It also shows the characters may be excited and eager.
- " “ His three listeners leaned forward eagerly” " (Jacobs line 53). This quote from “The Monkey’s Paw” shows mood because it creates tension and nervousness. We do not know what will happen after Morris shows them the paw.
