  • The major causes of World War II were numerous. They include the impact of the Treaty of Versailles following WWI, the worldwide economic depression, failure of appeasement, the rise of militarism in Germany and Japan, and the failure of the League of Nations.

  • United States chose a foreign policy of isolationism in the 1930´s. That passed the Neutrality Acts. Prohibited the country from loaning money or selling weapons to countries at war. Hoped to prevent issues that dragged the United States in the Great War (WWI).

  • At September 1939 Hitler invaded Poland. Germans conducted a blitzkrieg (lightning war) against Poland. The Soviets attacked Poland from the West. Soviet Union was Germany’s allies due to the Soviet Non-Aggression Pact of 1939. British and French allies came to Poland’s defense.

  • The Battle of Britain was from 1940-1941. German air force bombed Britain. British used radar to prepare for bombings. British refused to surrender. Hitler focused on attacking other areas of Europe. Fighting occurred in North Africa. German wanted to control Suez Canal. Gain access to oil-rich Middle East. Hitler betrayed ally- Soviet Union. They Attacked country in 1941. Germans were unsuccessful in taking Leningrad and Moscow. Over 500,000 Germans died during invasion.
  • In 1942 Allied forces defeated German General Rommel’s forces in North Africa. Led by American General Dwight Eisenhower. In 1943 Germans on the defensive. After they were defeated by Russians in the Battle of Stalingrad in February. In 1944 Allied forces entered Rome. Mussolini was killed by his own countrymen in 1945.
  • World War 2 ended with the unconditional surrender of the Axis powers. On 8 May 1945, the Allies accepted Germany's surrender, about a week after Adolf Hitler had committed suicide. VE Day – Victory in Europe celebrates the end of the Second World War on 8 May 1945.
