  • Hey Maggie!Guess what? My parents said that we could build a tree house!
  • Really!Then let's get to work!!
  • We need a ladder! We know that the treehouse is 8ft up and the ladder has to be at least 6ft away from the tree. But how long does the ladder have to be?!!
  • A FEW HOURS LATER...
  • Oh!I think I have and easy way to figure that out!
  • Its a simple thing called the Pythagorean Theorem!
  • I think i've heard about it, but what is it?
  • It's a rule that if you have the two sides of a right triangle, then you can find the third one using those two angles! Lets use the lengths that we have so far to figure out the length of the ladder... The formula is: a2 + b2 = c2 A and B are the two lines that make a right angle. C is the angle that is across those two angles. In other words, the angle that we are trying to determine now. In this case, 18ft acts as A (not a squared), and 6 acts as B. First, we have to find their square roots. The square root of eight is 64, six's is 36. Then, we add them to get 100. However we are not done yet! Now we find the square root of 100, its 10!The ladder must be 10ft long!!
  • 6 FT
  • 8 FT
  • 10 FT
  • a2 + b2 = c282 + 62 = c264 + 36 = c
  • 36+ 64 100
  • 100 = c10 = c2
  • Look! I told my dad and he built a 10 ft ladder for us!
  • That's great!!Now lets test it out!
  • IT WORKED!
