- he helps Haie, he gives them food, and he gives them the "easy" chores
- Himmelstoss tries to make amends with the boys because he now understands what its like

- Paul and Kropp see a poster with a girl and boy on it and get mad and hate the boy because they poster is showing them what they are missing out on because they are at war
- after staring at the poster they decide to go find themselves girls
- Tjaden bribed the girls with food and the girls left but showed the boys a house 
- All of the boys decided to go swimming on their side of the canal and thats when they saw three girls on the other side 
- as the boys went later that night only three of them could go because there were only three girls  so they tricked Tjaden and left him out. so they each brought the girls food 
- and Paul specifically called "dibs" on the brown headed one 
- as the boys left the girls Leer and Kropp were perfectly fine and happy but Paul over thinks everything and. so when they had to leave he basically got himself heart broken 
- Paul thinks of the little brown headed girl as someone to love so he was so sad and hurt to leave 
- The following morning Paul got called into the persons office and he got told that he was getting 17 days to go home since they were no longer on the front because they have to wait for more men 
- Paul is scared and he worries that when he returns from his leave that things will be different because when he comes back he goes somewhere else to train, and he's scared that when he returns none of his friends or other comrades will still be there. like who will die next when he leaves and who will still be there when he gets back
