Storyboard Text

  • Jane Eyre is questioning Miss Scatcherd's cruelty (and the cruelty of the school towards Helen in general). Helen disagrees with Jane's point of view, stating that Miss Scatcherd simply dislikes her faults.
  • How can you tolerate Miss Scatcherd's cruelty?
  • You're mistaken. Miss Scatcherd dislikes my faults.
  • In this scene, Mr Brocklehurst lectures to everyone on how Jane Eyre, despite how she may look or act, is a liar and a disgrace to God. He tells them to shun her example, and to exclude her from their activities.
  • My dear children, this girl, who may be one of god's little lambs, is an alien. You must exclude her from your sports, and shun her example, for she...is a liar!
  • How Shocking!
  • After Mr Brocklehurst's lecture, Jane is sad because she feels that because now no one would like her, her life at Lowood was ruined. Helen Burns tries to comfort Jane by telling her that even if the world hated Jane, if her conscience approved, and absolves you from guilt, you would have friends in some form.
  • Only eighty people have heard you been called so. Besides, Mr Brocklehurst is not a god, nor an admirable man. Even as teachers and pupils look coldly upon you, friendly feelings are concealed inside their hearts.
  • Helen, why do you stay with a girl whom everybody believes to be a liar?
  • Where are you going, Helen? Are you doing home? To heaven?
  • Jane is grieving about Helen, because Helen is about to die. Helen tries to comfort Jane yet again by stating that "Everyone must die at some point". She also states that her mind is at rest, and that Jane should not grieve. Helen dies that night, and is buried the next day.
  • Yes. I'm going home, to my last home. When I die, Jane, you should not grieve, for there is nothing to grieve about. We all must die one day, and my mind is at rest. By dying young, I will escape great sufferings, for I lack qualities that would enable me to make my way in the world: I should've continually been at fault.
  • A bit far, but here's a new occupation! A complete change of scenery!
  • If J.E, who advertised in the shire herald, possesses the stated skills, then a situation can be offered where there is one pupil, under ten years of age, and where the salary is 30 pounds per year. J.E is to send references, name, address, and all other particulars to Mrs Fairfax, at Thornfield hall near Millcote. (Shire).
  • In this scene, Jane is reading the mail that she received from the post office. While she feels slightly conflicted about leaving to such a busy town, she embraces her chance at a new life and is excited to fulfill her new role.
