  • Abagail is trying to persuade John Proctor in the scene to continue their affair. Abagail uses language like "Gah! I'd almost forgot how strong you are, John Proctor!"(pg 21, 1.1) This is Abagail's way of trying to flirt with John Proctor, so they can continue their fling.
  • When John Proctor tries to deny that there is anything going on Abagail tries to influence him: "...and I have seen you looking up, burning in loneliness." (pg 23, 1.1) She tries to persuade and bring up memories to Proctor so he can admit that they have something going on. Abagail tries to control the scene so she can get something out of Proctor.
  • Thoughts
  • Apperance
  • Although there aren't direct thoughts from Abagail in the scene, she does have certain body language that can help the reader infer her internal thoughts. Abagail "dares come closer, feverishly looking into his eyes." (pg 22, 1.1) Here the reader can infer that Abagail is sexually repressed. That is what Abagail represents, the Puritan sexual repression. Since this time period everyone was religious, a lot of things weren't allowed especially infidelity. This repression influences Abagail to act on her sexual desires with Proctor.
  • Abagail is trying to be perceived as an innocent girl. She does this through the cues that are placed in the book like her "in tears" (pg 24, 1.1.) and "grasping his hand"(pg 22, 1.1) These cues tells the reader that Abagail is going to do what it takes to get her way and what she wants. This signifigantly impacts the story because it shows how immature and desperate Abagail is trying to persuade a man in his mid thirties to be with her while she is 17.

  • Viewing from other point of view it seems that Abagail could possibly be trying to distract Proctor from the rumors. It is rumored that Abagail and some girls were practicing witchcraft in the forest: " Proctor, ..The town's mumbling witchcraft." Abagail, We were dancing in the woods last night.." This here can be viewed as a weak attempt of her trying to flirt with Proctor and also her trying to lessen the fact that she actually was partaking in witchcraft. This can viewed by outside parties as her being malicious, sneaky, and desperate.
  • Abagail tries to seduce/flirt with Proctor in this scene. She brings up moments they shared together like, "...how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion..."(pg 22, 1.1) By her continuously bringing up moments like this to Proctor it furthers his defensiveness on their so called affair. It starts to shove a rift in their relationship for this scene. For the story as a whole, it starts a conflict and adds onto the heaping pile that is growing.
