- Exposition-Act I-Abigail and her friends were in the forest dancing and performing a ritual with Tituba. Paris and Mr.Putnam encourages the idea of witchcraft especially when Betty wasn’t able to wake up after the forest ritual. Abigail confesses to dancing which makes her a suspect to witchcraft.
- Rising action-Hale comes to town to see if there is really any evil uprising and he spots witchcraft. The girls accuse other people for sending their evil spirits. Abigail blames Elizabeth proctor to witchcraft. The accusations cause the start of the Salem witch trials.
- There are several conflicts taking place in the Crucible, but the major conflict is between the reason of the human mind and the irrational fear of hysteria.The Crucible portrays external conflicts between John Proctor and his wife, Abigail, and the court’s corruption. Proctor's internal conflicts, revolving around morality in the story line and the plot of this play.
- Climax-Begins in Act III-Act IV. During the crucible, anyone who is accused are asked to confess. Many do to save themselves from possibly death from the court. In an attempt to tell the truth, Proctor confesses his adultery. But when they asked his wife, she lies in order to protect her husband’s honor.
- Falling action-John Proctor is tired of Abigail’s lies; so he doesn’t go to flea with her. He admits he's seen no one with the devil and signs his name for the confession. Proctor then realizes that God has seen his confession and he doesn’t need the rest of the village to see it too. Therefore, he tears the papers that he signed and accepts death.
- Epliogue-At the close of the play, we are told that the fever of witch hunting eventually dies down in Salem. John proctor gets hanged, along with goody nurse and others who didn’t confess.Reverend Parris is also voted out of office and is never seen again. Abigail Williams turns up in Boston as a prostitute.
