Storyboard Text

  • There was a triumvirate that ruled over Rome together. The three people that comprised the triumvirate were Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus.
  • The relationship between Caesar and Pompey was always uneasy. The two disagreed very often on how to govern Rome. This has caused betrayals such as what happened to a senator named Brutus. As he disagreed with Caesar, he betrayed Caesar and allied himself with Pompey.
  • I am sorry, my friend Caesar, but I must ally myself with Pompey as he makes superior decisions.
  • The conflict was resolved after civil war. At the decisive battle of Pharsalus, Caesar's army defeated Pompey's army
  • Now that I will be the only leader of Rome, I will be obeyed by all.
  • Retreat!!!
  • With Pompey no longer holding power. Caesar was made dictator of Rome for life.
  • Oh No, is he going to be a dictator?
  • On March 15, 44 BCE, at the Roman Senate, Julius Caesar was assassinated by Roman senators that feared that he would become a tyrant as a dictator for life. Thus, these senators betrayed him in an attempt to save the Roman Republic from tyranny.
  • At last, our republic is safe from tyranny once and for all!
  • Et tu, Brute?
  • The ensuring chaos resulted in another civil war where Mark Antony, Caesar's right-hand man survived and allying himself with Octavian, who was Caesar's cousin. Together , they defeated the conspirators' forces. However, Mark Antony soon betrayed Rome and fled Rome for Egypt, only to be defeated by Octavian's forces at that Battle of Actium in 31 BCE. Though he never recognized himself as emperor, Octavian, then known as Augustus Caesar, was the first Emperor of Rome.
  • These people must stop calling me an emperor!
