- Michael and Mina Meet

- This place belonged to my grandfather. It was in his will. It will be mine when I am 18.
- Meeting Skellig

- Who are you?
- Michael and his family just recently moved into a new house that was run down. One day, Mina, one of his neighbors, is interested about him and climbs the wall separating their houses to talk to him.
- An Argument Between Michael and Mina
- "Thank God I wasn't sent to school/to be flog'd into following the styles of a fool."
- You don't know anything. We don't get flogged and my friends aren't fools.
- Mina and Michael become good friends. Michael has a baby sister who is ill and is in the hospital. One day, Mina shows Michael a secret hideout of hers that once belonged to her grandfather but would be hers when she is 18. It is an abandoned house. At the top floor, in the attic, Mina shows Michael.. Tawny Owls.
- The Skellig Dance
- Michael decides to show Mina a person called Skellig. Michael found him in the garage one day and decided to help in secret. He brought Skellig food (27 and 53 from the Chinese Restaurant). Skellig suffers from arthuritis. When they question Skellig, he is evasive in his answers. They managed to convince Skellig to let them move him out. They moved him to the abandoned house. There they discover that Skellig has wings!

- Mina doesn't go to school. Her mother educates her. They believe schools don't let you have freedom. One day, Michael's school friends come over and insult Mina by calling her "Monkey Girl". Mina is angry and she blows up at Michael. She delivers the first insult to Michael. Later they make up and become friends again.
- They meet Skellig this particular night and he is stronger than he was before. They form a circle, they grow ghostly wings, then they spun and danced and they were lifted from the floor and they were flying. Their heart beated together in rhythm and it seemed as if they had become one being.
- Skellig visits Michael's baby sister in the hospital and makes her well again. Then he tells Michael and Mina that he is going to leave. He leaves them 3 tiny white feathers as a gift. Michael's family name the baby Joy. One of the feathers is for her.
