  • The curling iron
  • History class
  • Well, I'm very glad you asked because that is the exact story I'm about to tell you students!
  • I love Story's!
  • Miss Williams: "Well, it all started in 1872 in a small town in France. There once was a tiny hairdresser business owned by a 20 year old man named Marcel Grateau."
  • La salon de Marcel Grateau
  • "Marcel loved his job as a hairdresser but felt it was getting a little boring. So, he decided to create something that would change the hairdressing world completely. "
  • "So later that night when he got home he got to work. He wanted to create something he'd be famous for. So, he did just that. He started to do some calculations and assemble some pieces."
  • "He worked day and night but still couldn't figure out how to create what he would call the 'curling iron'."
  • "But then the next morning, he had an amazing idea and got to work right away!"
  • "Then, he was finally done his sketch."
  • "His idea was that if he took tongs and clipped them together and put them and the tongs would have been heated over a flame and then sections of hair were curled around them."
  • "So he started assembling the tongs together using a clip he needed to make his brand new invention."
  • "And they loved it!"
  • "And there it was, his brand new famous invention"
  • "He was so exited to use his new creation! And he learned soon after that the curls were better if he turned the iron upside down. But he had to use it carefully because the hot tongs were heated directly in the fire, making the temperature difficult to control. As a result, when used carelessly, or incorrectly, they could not only scorch a lady's hair, they could also blister her fingers and burn the delicate skin of her face and ears."
  • La salon de Marcel Grateau
  • "And soon Marcel became the most popular hairdresser in France! Everybody wanted the new curls!"
