  • DNA Sequencing
  • DNA sequencing is a technique for determining the nucleotide sequence of a piece of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). A gene's or genome's nucleotide sequence is the most fundamental level of knowledge. It is the blueprint that carries the instructions for constructing an organism, and without it, no understanding of genetic function or evolution would be complete.
  • Evolution is concerned with heritable population changes over time. Because DNA is the molecule of inheritance, changes in the base pairs in DNA will reflect evolutionary changes. DNA from two animals that have a common ancestor will have relatively similar base pair sequences. The degree of relatedness between two species can be determined by comparing their base pair sequences. Hybridization of DNA is one method of determining relatedness.
  • DNA-DNA Hybridization
  • Protein Comparison (amino acid sequence)
  • The DNA sequences in the genes of different species changed somewhat as they evolved over time. Because the amino acid sequence of a protein is determined by its DNA sequence, a gene shared by two closely related animals should have amino acid sequences that are similar, if not identical. When you compare how many amino acids are in the same position on the protein chain, you can get a sense of how closely two species are linked.
  • So what gives an organism its appearance or any of its characteristics for that matter?
  • Characteristics (appearance)
  • Genes
  • Proteins
  • DNA
  • Similar Characteristics =Similar DNA
  • Well the characteristics or appearance of an organism as we know come from the proteins that the contain and the proteins are produced in the cells of that organism and are coded for by genes and the genes are found In the DNA So the organisms that looked similar or have similar characteristics they have similar DNA and that is the key in determining evolutionary relationships.
  • That's all, thank you!
