  • We must defeat those Carthaginians! They are becoming too powerful!
  • We are becoming powerful now let’s conjure Rome! We should attack by ship!
  • In the beginning Rome was wary of Carthage , but then Carthage began to gain more power and Rome was starting to take action. The Romans said that they would do away with Carthage so they couldn’t take over Rome.
  • In the beginning Carthage started taking over small territories, but then they became stronger. Once they grew powerful they didn’t stop and headed to destroy Rome. They were good on water so they decided to attack by boat.
  • During the first Punic war Carthage was strong on water so they attacked Rome on ships. Rome knew they were better on land so they made a plan. The Romans would grapple hook on and put a ladder (gangplank) on the boat so the could come to the side of the Carthage ship. Then they would climb on to fight them by hand. The Romans plan was a success and they won! Rome then won Sicily and Carthage was very upset.
  • In the second Punic war a famous Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca led his elephant through Spain to attack Rome. This is why this war is the most famous of them all. Several Roman armies were sent to stop him , Hannibal was going to act on a war of attrition. Hannibal then camps in the Alps Mountains for months to tire the Romans. He gives up this plan and leaves with a smaller army to fight. Hannibal wins one, but the Romans win one and outsmart him to attack Carthage. The Romans win and siege Carthage.
  • In the third Punic war Rome decided to end Carthage once and for all so that they couldn’t regain power. Cato the Elder was the one to push the final standing even though Carthage was already ruined. The Romans set fire to Carthage and burned everything unless it was truly valuable in which case they took back to Rome. The entire population that hadn’t died was sold into slavery. Salt was thrown around the city so that nothing could grow again.
  • The impact of these wars led to Rome expanding its territory very far. Rome gained the islands of Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, and they could expanded in North Africa, Iberian Peninsula, and Asia Minor. Rome became very powerful in the end.
