A WON BATTLE: A TRAVELBEE MODEL-INSPIRED SHORT COMIC STORYBy Angela Verbo
So what are my findings, Doc Llagas?
Unfortunately, you have cancer, Ms. Verbo. Stage 4. You barely have 2 years left to live.
I highly recommend that you resort to chemotherapy ASAP.
INITIAL ENCOUNTER
Hi, Nurse Clary. I'm all set.
Hello Ms. Verbo. I'm Clary, your nurse from this day forward. It's time for your chemo.
EMERGING IDENTITIES
1 YEAR LATER...
That's it for your today's chemo, Ms. Verbo. What are you feeling?
Honestly, I don't know anymore, Nurse. I don't see this working anytime soon.
My whole body just aches. It makes me sad to feel nothing but weakness, that I'm starting to get depressed, I think.
1st Scenario: Ms. Verbo consults her doctor, wherein she first discovers her illness, a cellular defect or much known as cancer.
EMPATHY
She's been suffering for so long. I wish I could comfort her in saying that chemo always works. But how could I when it doesn't really? If I were her, I'd rather hear the truth.
1st Phase of Travelbee's Interaction Process: The initial meeting of the patient and the nurse, Ms. Verbo and Nurse Clary respectively.
SYMPATHY
It's hopeless. It's been what? Over a year since I started chemo and still no improvements. I'm running out of time. This is all a waste. What difference does it make if I die right here, right now?
2nd Phase of Travelbee's Interaction Process: The visibility of personal or emerging identities, wherein relationships are formed. The nurse and patient begin to perceive each other's uniqueness.
RAPPORT
A FEW MONTHS LATER...
Dear Nurse Clary,Thank you for fighting by my side for 2 years. If it weren't for you, I would've given up on life much earlier, but you gave me hope. Remember when you said there's more value to life than I think? I now understand that. I lived not for my own sake but for others. Thank you for urging me to fight, Clary. Please rejoice in knowing I won this battle, because I consider it a won battle.- Angela
3rd Phase of Travelbee's Interaction Process: Empathy is given by the desire to establish a mutual aid process, emphasizing the interest in wanting to understand the other person's feelings and experiences.
4th Phase of Travelbee's Interaction Process: Sympathy is when the nurse feels the gravity of wanting to reduce the cause of the patient's suffering by offering words of comfort.
Don't say that, Ms. Verbo. You still have precious months, hopefully more, to be better. Why don't you make the most of it? There's more to life than you may think, more opportunities, especially during these darkest hours of yours. Please think about it.
5th Phase of Travelbee's Interaction Process, Rapport: In Ms. Verbo's last will, she wants her eyes donated to the blind man she became acquainted with at the hospital and her heart to Nurse Clary's daughter, who has a heart ailment. In this phase, the patient's suffering lessens, knowing that her passing brought hope to those she left behind.
