Storyboard Text

  • Around 400 BCE, Siddhartha Gautama was born as prince of small Hindu Kingdom. His father shielded him from suffering because he wanted him to become a great king not a great saviour. He married at 16, and was on his way to political leadership.
  • At the age of 35, the Buddha gave his first sermon, called the Dharmachakra, or the Wheel of Dharma, about the nature of human existence and what people must do to release themselves from suffering.
  • Siddhartha first witnessed suffering when he saw a stiff and worn-out old man, an ill man in great pain, and a dead man whose family was weeping over him. Until then, he did not know that old age, disease, or death existed.
  • He then saw a calm and peaceful holy man. Curious about him, Siddhartha left his wife and son to become a religious ascetic and search for the cause of suffering along with 5 companions.
  • After 6 unsuccessful years of achieving enlightenment, Siddhartha decided to find a middle ground between luxury and asceticism by meditating for 49 day against the evil god Mara.
  • When he attained Great Enlightenment, he became known as the Buddha and shared his insights on how to avoid suffering, and steps to enter nirvana. Siddhartha Gautama died at the age of 80.
