  • Let me see if I can help explain things. Plants need sunlight for energy in photosynthesis. What will happen is plants breath in carbon dioxide in the air through tiny holes in their leaves called stomata. During that time, plants are also absorbing water through their roots that travel into the leaves. Hey Fred, are you still following me? Inside the leaves are chloroplasts and that is where photosynthesis happens. The chloroplast take the water and carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen and glucose or also known as, food. Now check this out, the leaves will then release the oxygen for us to breath and survive. Pretty cool right!
  • This makes much more sense now. Thank Alex for explaining things. But whats with this whole cellular respiration talk?
  • Yeah Karen, ATP is energy!
  • Hey Karen, I totally understand why cellular respiration is so important, listen to this...Obviously you know we need oxygen and glucose to survive right? But did you know that our cells have something inside us called the "powerhouse of the cell"? It's called the mitochondria and thats where cellular respiration happens. It's like this, when we breath in oxygen and use glucose, well it goes to the mitochondria and turns into water and carbon dioxide. AND, when we exhale, we send out carbon dioxide back into the air and releases energy or ATP at the sametime! That reaction affects all of us. This book uses a fancy word called an exothermic reaction.
  • ATP? Never heard of it!
  • Let's put it all together. Plants get energy from the sun and perform photosynthesis giving off oxygen and glucose. Then we use the oxygen and glucose from photosynthesis to make water and carbon dioxide through cellular respiration which releases energy. From there, the cycle starts all over again. So, it's true BOTH photosynthesis and cellular respiration are equally important and we can't have one without the other.
  • That's right Carl, you can't have the reactants without the products, and you can't have the products without the reactants!
