  • They have to live here because there house was burned and their parents died.
  • Count Olaf, their new guardian, is mean and cruel. He makes them do many, many chores. He also makes them make dinner for his friends and himself.
  • Lastly, The Baudelaire Children find out that Count Olaf is after their fortune. He sets up a play and tries to marry legally. He does this because if he were Violet's husband, he would get control over the fortune.
  • THE MARRIAGE IS INVALID!
  • Due to the house burning down, the Baudelaire children had to live with Count Olaf. They had never met or known about Count Olaf. Mr.Poe tells the children, "He is either a third cousin four times removed, or a fourth cousin three times removed. He is not your closest relative on the family tree, but he is the closest geographically.
  • Due to this, the children get scared and worried. Count Olaf even strikes Klaus in the face. When they go to tell Mr.Poe that this is happening and they are very stressed, He says, " I'm sorry if your parents did not make you do any household chores, or if you never saw them drink any wine, or if you like their friends better than Count Olaf's friends, but these are things that you must get used to, as Count Olaf is acting in loco parentis. Understand?"
  • Due to this, Violet almost marries Count Olaf. Then Klaus finds out what Count Olaf had planned. So Violet signs with her left hand and the marriage becomes invalid.
