- In 1952, Nelson Mandela became the Deputy National President of the ANC and began organizing boycotts and  marches.

- The massacre of Black demonstrators at Sharpeville in 1960 resulted in 69 lives lost and 180 injured which led to the ANC,  Black political organization against apartheid, being illegal.
- After the Sharpeville massacre,  Mandela organized a paramilitary branch in an attempt to sabotage  against the government. However, this led to his life sentence in prison on the 12th of June, 1964, as he plead guilty.
- How do you plead?
- I plead guilty.
- Nelson Mandela wrote  anti-apartheid letters from prison and eventually, was released early by South African president, F.W de Klerk in 1990, who abolished the ban on the ANC. In 1994, Mandela became the South African presiden and removed all apartheid laws.
- The effects of apartheid are still felt as 61% of Blacks in South Africa are poor while only 1% of Whites are poor.
