  • My name is Rachel Carson and I am a biologist best known for my work in spreading awareness of the negative effects of pesticides on the environment.
  • I originally noticed that DDT, a pesticide widely used at the time, was killing mass amounts of fish and birds. This was detrimental to the environment and the entire food chain as a whole, and eventually would begin affecting humans in a negative way.
  • In 1962, I published my findings in a book called "Silent Spring". In the book I talked about how DDT specifically was extremely harmful to the environment.
  • I talked about how it didn't dissolve in water and how it only created more resistant insects. I also talked about its effect on the entire food chain and how DDT in insects could eventually make it's way back up to us Humans and alter our gene structure.
  • After the publishing of my book, there was a public outcry against unregulated pesticide use. The public seeked action from the federal government. They worried that future generations could be negatively affected from the widespread pesticide use that had been going on.
  • Through my findings in conjunction with the voices of the public, we were able to pressure the government into creating the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) as well as NEPA. These two changes in government helped ensure that the environment would not be abused in the future. All in all, my findings helped pave the way for environmental health in the US
