  • November 1620The arrival of the Mayflower. The Europeans or pilgrims came from England to find a new home and start a colony in the New world because they were trying to escape the jurisdiction of the Church of England because they thought it violated the concept of true Christianity.
  • March 1621The first interaction between the Europeans and Wampanoag tribe.Soon after the first interaction, the Wampanoag chief, Massasoit paid a visit to the settlement.
  • The pilgrims were desperate for survival skills in this new land and the Wampanoag tribe was desperate for defense resources so they both needed something that the other could provide.
  • Since the pilgrims were in need of how to get food, the Wampanoag tribe taught them how to plant and grow foods such as the Three Sisters. The Natives also traded things like turkey and wampam while in return, the pilgrims traded resources such as iron. This peaceful and beneficial relationship eventually led to the pilgrims inviting the Wampanoag to the first Thanksgiving.
  • November 1621 , ThanksgivingThe pilgrims were celebrating their first harvest which was all possible because of the help of the Wampanoag tribe. They had deer, turkey and other birds, fish, and the Three Sisters While there, both groups ate, played games and prayed and gave thanks for their good fortune.
  • In the following years, the Pilgrims betrayed the Wampanoag. The Pilgrims thought they were above the Native Americans; they didn't need their help anymore and they wanted more land and power. Squanto, a Wampanoag member, played a big part in turning the pilgrims against the tribe in an attempt to get power. This led to genocide of the Wampanoag tribe and taking of their land. Many years later, King Philip, Massasoit's son got revenge on some of the European colonies which was the catalyst that started King Philip's War. Overall, The Europeans gained more land and power and the Wampanoag tribe lost a lot of their people and land. Many of the Native Americans were even enslaved.
