Storyboard Text

  • Life for colonists in the 1500s
  • The wives worked in the kitchen and helped raise the children. Back then, women had limited choices. They only were allowed to have a few jobs other than taking care of their family.
  • The men worked on farms, worked in mines, and created ships. Men were allowed to vote and could have any job they wanted.
  • Enslaved Africans would stay in a dirty room in a ship with rats and would be in chains. They would travel on a ship and not many survived. The slaves had to make terrible sacrifices in order to stay alive.
  • Sharks would follow the boat feeding on dead bodies thrown overboard. If a slave died the colonists would loose money so they tried to keep the slaves alive. If a slave became sick the colonists would throw them overboard so they didn't spread the disease. It was easy for slaves to become sick because they were living in dirty disease filled rooms.
  • If slaves were caught trying to jump overboard then they would go through painful torture methods such as the whip. The colonists would also use torture methods to make the slaves eat.
