  • Hello! Today i'm going to be telling you about Mesopotamia! In modern days Mesopotamia is called Iraq, and the continent Mesopotamia is on is Asia.
  • And the two rivers that help civilization be successful are the Tigris and Euphrates river.
  • People moved to the Tigris and Euphrates river because Mesopotamia had so much land and crops that to many people went to Mesopotamia that they started having food shortages.
  • Driven by the need to grow food, people moved out of the foothills and onto the plains. This region became known as sumer, and its people, the Sumerians.
  • During the spring, rain and melted snow from the mountains flowed into the tigris and ephourates rivers, causing them to flood across the plains. therefore, the sumerian farmers began creating irrigation systums for there feilds. They built levees along the sides of the river to prevent flooding.
  • We have something called a Irrigation canal and they get super dirty with something called slit. One clogged could canal could disrupt the entire system. Framers had to clean the canals regulaly.
  • Since villages were connected for miles around by these canals, farmers could no longer live apart, or in small groups. so they had to work together.
  • Since the cities grew the people foughtover the right to use more water.Sometimes, people in cities located upriver, built new canals, or blocked other cities' canals.
  • As you have seen, the Sumerians have gone from living in small farming villages to big walled city-states. They also built and irrigation system to control the water supply. The system crossed villages so the villages had to cooperate with one another. That led them to live in larger communities-the first city-state.
  • They also had walled city-states. They dug moats around their cities to protect themselves.
