  • This is outrageous! What do you mean we're being taxed for tea?!
  • Foreign goods were taxed less, which caused smuggling to increase in the colonies. In order to decrease this, the Sugar act was passed. It would severely punish anyone who was caught smuggling. The laws were strictly enforced. The sugar act did not work and was later repealed.
  • Boston Massacre
  • The stamp taxed colonies for various forms of paper, documents, or cards. This was passed to help pay for British troops placed in the colonies. Many were outraged by the stamp act. The act was imposed directly on the colonies by the British government without the approval of the colonial legislatures. Those accused of violating the stamp act were prosecuted
  • Boston Tea Party
  • The Townshend Acts is a series of laws that taxed goods imported to the American Colonies. The British colonies saw this as an abuse of power. The British sent troops to enforce this rule which further caused tension. The colonies were being taxed pay for the cost of the French and Indian War. Many found this unfair
  • Intolerable Acts
  • They're making us house these darn soldiers now!
  • The Boston Massacre was a riot that occurred on King Street in Boston. Protesters who called themselves Patriots were protesting British soldiers who were sent to enforce unfair laws and taxes. The people were throwing snowballs and other objects at the soldiers . One of the objects hit a soldier which caused him to fire a rifle at the crowd. The other soldiers began firing, when it was over, eight colonists were dead or injured
  • Britain passed the Tea Act which put a tax on tea. This caused outrage. In order to protest the Tea Act, colonists dress up as natives and dump 18,000 lbs. of tea into the Boston Harbor. This caused Britain to lose a lot because all of that tea is now useless. This was what caused the British to pass the next set of laws called the Quartering Act.
  • In response to the Boston Tea Party, the British respond with a series of laws as punishment. First, they closed the Boston Harbor which made it hard to transport goods. Second, It allowed soldiers to be housed in vacant homes. Third, Boston was ruled by military force. The law was originally named the Quartering Acts but it was hated so much, it was renamed to the 'Intolerable Act' by the colonists
