  • Brain wakes up to the feeling of being sick. Brian assumes this is because of the berries he ate the day before. He gets out of his shelter to vomit and has diaherra. Brian also comes across a bear that doesn't hurt him but just examines him,
  • Chapter 10
  • Brian wakes up in the middle of the night to a hissing sound and a terrible smell in his little shelter. He thinks it's a snake and throws his hatchet at it. The hatchet misses, hitting the wall and making a shower of sparks, and the creature gets closer. It's not a snake, it's a porcupine.
  • Chapter 11
  • Brian works on his fire. He tries to use the twenty-dollar bill as kindling, starter fuel for a fire, but it does not work. After that, he uses birch bark. At first, this does not work, but then he cuts the wood into small pieces.
  • Chapter 12
  • Brian takes careful care of his fire, only leaving it to get more wood. He spends the day carrying limbs from the forest to his camp. He also notices that the fire will help keep the mosquitoes away and can also be used to create a smoke sign
  • Brian takes care of his few chores to distract him from his depression. He works on his smoke signal for help. Brian also realizes he is thin due to the lack of food. Brian also realizes how much he has changed ever since the accident.
  • Brian spends many hours perfecting his fish spear, but in the end it fails to help him catch any fish. In need of a way to send the spear into the water, Brian decides to make a bow and arrow. While searching for wood, Brian almost steps on a bird and it flies up in a flurry of feathers.
