  • American Indians of California
  • The American Indians of California stretch from the southern Oregon all the way to Baja California. The region includes the coast, coastal foothills, an inland valley, deserts, and the western side of sierra Nevada mountain range. Indians on the coast would eat fish, while Indians away the coast hunted deer, rabbits, and ducks. They also ate roots, berries, and nuts. Indian women would aprons and skirts made out of grass and other plants, or leather strips. And when its colder, they put on animal hides. California people would also build houses based on where they live. In a forest, they will use tools made from antlers and elk to strip large slabs of bark from redwood trees. They draped these into a cone shape to form a house. In marshy areas, people wore thick mats of reeds to drape over a cone-shaped framework of poles. Californian people wove plant materials into many useful items like cooking baskets, storage baskets, sifters, and fish traps. Women made fine weavings when making a basket with elegant patterns, decorating their work with clamshells and bird feathers.
