- Maori used to own 23.2 million acres of land in Aotearoa. However, by 1890 they had lost nearly half of their land. But why?
- In 1863, the New Zealand Settlements Act 1863 was put in place. This allowed the government to confiscate land off Maori, as a punishment for those who fought in the New Zealand wars.

- Only two years later, the Native Land Court was created in order to 'control' the ownership of Maori land. It divided land in to ten parts for ten indivdiuals of the iwi. These people could do whatever they wanted with the land, without the approval of the rest of the iwi. This 'solution' created even more problems for Maori, as they were forced to sell their land becaue they were in debt: due to the courts that took place.

- By the 1870s, the government took even more land from Maori, under the Public Works Lands Act 1864. This enabled the government to take any land they wanted for public works like roads and railways. This loophole was another law the government used to take advantage of their power.

- Due to their loss of land, Maori were deeply imapced negatively. Iwi were forced to live in unhealthy living environments, with very little money. They also lost their spiritual connection with their land.
- The loss of land impacted Maori so much, that they are still impacted by it. To this day, Maori continue to fight for their right to get their land back.
