  • The allegorical sense om the Parable of the Prodigal Son is that there are many different meanings to this story. The Father represents God, the older son represents Jesus or the saints, and the younger saints represents the sinners, or all of us. Someone could take all the aspects of the story and make it a modern-day interpretation. For example, the man in the picture just went out betting and wasted all of his money saved for his family. He went around to food pantries asking for help, but no one helped him. He was ashamed to go home to his family, so he went to the Church to pray to God. The crucifix represent Jesus in this case. Someone could take the key messages from this and put them into a modern-day situation to understand it better.
  • The literal sense of the Parable of the Prodigal Son is that the father gives his sons their inheritance. The one son goes out, spends it all, and comes back to the Father asking for forgiveness. The father calls for a feast celebrating the return of his lost son. The other son, who uses the money responsibly, is angered because he never got a feast for being good but his brother gets one for being bad.
