  • "When he opened his eyes, he knew from the position of the sun that it was late in the afternoon."This shows that Rainsford woke up on the shore. I chose this as the background because it's the start of the main conflict.
  • "He saw no sign of a trail through the closely knit web of weeds and trees; it was easier to go along the shore, and Rainsford floundered along by the water."This shows Rainsford wandering through the jungle. This was chosen for the rising action because it builds up to the moment Rainsford goes to Zaroff's house, which is the climax.
  • “'But no animal can reason,' objected Rainsford.'My dear fellow,' said the general, 'there is one that can.'"This shows the indirect way Zaroff told Rainsford his big game was humans. I chose this for the climax because it is the main turning point in the story.
  • "His whole idea at first was to put distance between himself andGeneral Zaroff, and, to this end, he had plunged along, spurred on by the sharp rowels of something very like panic."This shows multiple times in the story where Zaroff let Rainsford go when he could have killed him. I chose this as the falling action because it shows the unraveling of the 3-day challenge.
  • “'Splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard, Rainsford. . . .'"This shows that Zaroff was very in over his head about fighting and it was his weakness in the end. This is the resolution because it shows the main conflict being resolved, which is Zaroff.
