- Person vs. Nature
- "Lyddie glared straight into the bear's eyes, daring him to step forward into the cabin." (2)
- Person vs. Person
- "Clarisa said when the end drew near, the devil would walk the earth." (4)... "Meentime I hav hire you out to M.Cutler at the tavern and fer yr. brother to Bakers mill."
- The devil's coming!
- Ain't no devil comin', mama!
- Person vs. Self
- I could get two whole dollars if I go to Lowell... but, what about Mama, and Charlie?
- "And there was only one place in New England where a girl could get a good cash wage for her work - and that was in Lowell, in the mills." (44)
- This is an example of Person vs. Nature because the bear is a part of nature and him breaking into Lyddie's small cabin caused a major problem for Lyddie and her family.
- This is an example of Person vs. Person because Lyddie and Charlie do not want to go, in hopes theri father might return one day. On the other hand Lyddie's mother wants to move away because she thinks the end is near so she puts Lyddie and Charlie to work.
- Lyddie does not know if she should go to Lowell or if she should stay which means she is having an internal conflict with herself so this is an example of Person v. Self.
