- Janie kisses Johnny Taylor and Nanny sees her and gets angry. Nanny wants Janie to be safe and tells her to marry Logan Killicks.
- Janie is married to Logan Killicks but Logan leaves for a business proposition. Janie meets a man named Joe Starks. They talk about Janie running away with him to a new town.
- Janie ran away with Jody and they have settled in Eatonville. Jody tries to control her and Janie realizes that she married someone different than she thought.
- Joe Starks dies of liver failure. It has been 8 months since Joe's death and Janie is alone. Janie meets Tea Cake and they have fun together. Janie and Tea Cake start to fall for each other. They decide to get married and run away together.
- Janie and Tea Cake are living in a new town. A hurricane is flooding the town and they flee. In the river, Janie almost drowns. Tea Cake helps her and gets bit by a dog, infecting him with rabies. Rabies fills his head with paranoid thoughts. With these thoughts in his head Tea Cake points a pistol towards Janie. In self-defense, Janie shoots Tea Cake with a rifle.
- Janie goes back to Eatonville after Tea Cake's death. She ignores the gossiping townspeople and tells Pheobe the story of her life and that is where the story ends and begins.
