  • I love serotonin!
  • Millie, who just turned 8, is sleeping peacefully when she is woken up by the smell of her favorite breakfast, pancakes! After getting ready for school, she goes downstairs to eat and then goes out the door to walk to school with her parents.
  • UNIT 3 SPELLING TEST: TODAY!
  • As they walk, Millie feels the sunshine on her face and is immediately excited for her day. She loves walking to school with her parents because it reminds her of summer, when she gets to spend all day with them.
  • I'm stressed!!!
  • The combination of eating her favorite breakfast, spending time with her family, and being in the sun all contribute to Millie's happiness, which is from a release of serotonin in her brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain, which helps with mood regulation and memory. It is often referred to as the “feel-good” chemical, and can be triggered by sunshine, happy memories, and other pleasant events. Serotonin is the reason Millie feels so happy right now.
  • Unit 3 Study guide
  • Once Millie arrives at school, she immediately becomes stressed, realizing she forgot about her Unit 3 spelling test today. She becomes very anxious because she has not studied at all.
  • Due to this stressful event, Millie's brain releases noradrenaline, which is a stress hormone and the most common neurotransmitter of the sympathetic nervous system. In this situation, it is a hormone, being produced by the adrenal glands. Noradrenaline increases one's heart rate and blood pumping from the heart. It can also increase blood pressure due to the stressful event that has occurred.
  • However, Millie's mood quickly changes when her friend lets her borrow his study guide for the test. She is now able to study throughout the day before her test, allowing her to feel more calm and relaxed.
