Storyboard Text

  • There was recently a volcanic eruption, and now there is no life or biotic matter left in this land. Lets see how this land will change over time because of ecological succession.
  • This is primary succession. Primary succession is the first step of ecological succession. It is when an area gets colonized by a group of species after a great natural disaster. It is the first step towards building an ecosystem. There is only abiotic matter, and biotic matter is completely non existent. Then, pioneer species like lichen start growing on rocks. The lichen weathers the rock and creates soil.
  • Lichen
  • Grass starts to grow because of the soil. More and more producers come into the ecosystem, and the consumers are attracted to the ecosystem because of the producers. More and more populations and communities rise in the ecosystem.
  • bushes
  • Bigger consumers come because of the smaller consumers. Shrubs, small trees, and bushes show up because of the grass. Biodiversity keeps on increasing as more organisms come in.
  • bunny
  • This disturbance to the ecosystem will cause for secondary succession to begin. Secondary succession is when a transformation occurs in an area that has already been occupied/colonized.
  • Secondary succession is a lot faster than Primary succession because the soil is already present. Grass grows and attracts more organisms again.
