- In 1825, the Mexican government gifted land to Haden Edwards, who was a wealthy land speculator. The grant allowed him to settle 800 families.
- This land is so beautiful, I am going to settle 800 families!
- Edwards found many people already settled on his land, so he asked the settlers for proof that the land was theirs. This was a problem for the settlers because some of them didn't have any clear proof.
- No?!?!?!?
- What do you mean??!?!? This is our land
- The election for the mayor of Nacogdoches raised tensions even more. Samuel Norris agreed with the early settlers, while Chichester Chaplin sided with Edwards.
- I am the new mayor!!!
- He cant be mayor!!!
- After annoying the Mexican government with a lot of angry letters, the government finally decided to cancel Edwards land grant. This made him very, very angry.
- WHAT?!?!? HOW DARE YOU?!??!?!?
- Sorry, the government decided to take away your land
- In November, some followers of Edwards took Norris and Edwards and charged them with crimes, and then they replaced Norris with a new mayor. These rebels had no legal permission
- When the government learned about this, they sent troops to Nacogdoches.
