  • Saliva contains an enzyme calledamylase which breaks down starches into sugar.
  • Your teeth help grind up food into smaller pieces.

  • YOUR esophagus is a 20 cm long tube that connects your mouth to your stomach
  • Its purpose is to close and prevent food from entering trachea (windpipe) and lungs
  • Stomach
  • Thestomach also releases acids and enzymes
  • Your stomach is a j-shaped sack that stores and helps further breakdown of food
  • The stomach physically churn the food which helps break apart the food into smaller pieces.
  • Small Intestine
  • The chyme enters the small intestine which is a 7 meter long tube. Also 90% of all nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine.
  • Once the food molecules are brokendown even further by various chemicals, they move across the small intestine into thebloodstream.
  • Large Intestie
  • The large intestine (also called colon) is a 1.5 meter long tube.
  • the large intestine is to absorb water and to absorb any remaining nutrients from thefood before sending the undigested food to the rectum.
