  • Next stop is King Hill!
  • Dexter Avenue
  • There was just enough room for us!
  • Zzz
  • You girls have to give me this row because there are no more seats in my section.
  • Claudette and some of her classmates boarded a bus after being let out of school early that day.
  • We're so sorry miss.
  • I know my rights and I will not stand up.
  • "I need those seats" is what a bus driver would say when a white person needed a black person's seat in the 1950s.
  • Claudette and her classmates took up the last row of seats that was available to black people on the bus.
  • The driver said it was a young teenage girl, so let's just go in and grab her.
  • That sounds like a good plan.
  • A white woman boarded the bus and she demanded that the girls give her the row of seats because white and black people couldn't sit in the same row.
  • How long am I going to be here? Are my parents coming to get me?
  • Claudette's classmates moved, but she didn't budge, so the bus driver yelled at her multiple to give the woman the seats.
  • I need those seats!
  • Claudette refused to move or speak and the driver was fed up with her, so he contacted the police to wait at the next bus stop.
  • The policemen grabbed Claudette forcefully and brought her to an adult jail cell where she cried until her parents paid her fine and brought her home.
