- "In the small hours of the third watch, when stars that shone out in the first dusk of evening had gone down to their setting, a giant wind blew from heaven, and clouds driven by Zeus shrouded land and sea in a night of storm". (830)
- Odysseus and his men are pushed through a storm.
- Odysseus and his men lost all their food and supplies after getting blown into a cave.
- "touched the windy world, we dragged our ship to cover in a grotto, a sea cave" (835)
- "Slipping away, I struck across the island to a sheltered spot, out of the driving gale." (857)
- Odysseus and his crew find shelter. This is when Eurylochus talk them into giving into hunger.
- Odysseus and his men avoid the warning they were given not the eat the cattle and choose the victim to murder.
- "—to strew the victims,performed the prayers and ritual, knifed the kine and flayed each carcass, cutting thighbones free to wrap in double folds of fat"(886)
- "These offerings,with strips of meat, were laid upon the fire.Then, as they had no wine, they made libation"(888)
- Odysseus and his men cook and eat the victim they murdered.
- "Then Zeus who drives the storm cloud made reply:‘Peace, Helios: shine on among the gods,shine over mortals in the fields of grain.Let me throw down one white-hot bolt, and make splinters of their ship in the winedark sea.’" (915)
- Odysseus and his men are punished by Zeus for eating Helios's cattle. The are blown into a storm, and get taken to another island.
