- Jade Butler, a young black girl that attends St. Francis High School in Portland, Oregon. Jade goes to a school that is on the other side of town away from all of her family and friends. She attends St. Francis high school because it can give jade better opportunities. Jade is looking for a better start on her traveling and learning new languages.
- During Jade's junior year at St. Francis, her counselor Ms. Parker encourages her to join a girl program called Woman to Woman for other Black girls like her. The program pairs every student with a mentor to help accomplish their dreams. Jade 's dream is to study Spanish and travel.

- Jada starts to build up a friendship with a white girl who rides the same bus as her to go to school. Her name is Sam. Sam is from a poor white part of Portland city. Jade and Sam shared an understanding of money and socioeconomic issues. However, they differ in their understanding of each other's race. Jade has experienced many situations related to racism for example: She is seen ''unruly'' by a lunch lady at school; kicked out from a store for browsing around; getting looked over by her Spanish teacher for the study abroad program.
- Jade was frustrated with Maxine during her mentoring sessions. Maxine would stay on her phone instead of talking with her. Jade offered her practical advice and told her that if she stopped treating the students as objects of charity, the program would be more effective.
- And Jade combines her passion and love for collaging with her desire to stop social injustices. Jade is touched and shocked about the recent incidentabout NatashaRamsey, ayoung black teen who harassed and killed by police. Jade and her best friend, Lee Lee set up a community art show to raise awareness.

- Jade is offered by Maxine to come to the awareness event at Maxine's sister's art gallery. The event turns out to be a success. Towards the end of the story, the Woman to Woman turned into a program that no longer treats its students like problems that need to be solved, but instead a solution to helping the students with their problems with mutual respect.
