Storyboard Text

  • Before the Punic Wars, Rome was pretty powerful, but it was not an empire yet.
  • Before the Punic Wars, Carthage was very powerful and controlled much land.
  • The first Punic War was a naval battle. Carthage’s strongpoint was fighting on the water, while Rome’s strongpoint was fighting on land. The Romans built a special bridge on every ship so that they could cross over to Carthaginian ships and turn the battle into an on-land one. The Romans ended up defeating the Carthaginians.
  • The second Punic War was on land, and it is also the most well-known. A Carthaginian general, Hannibal Barca decided to invade Rome from the North by using elephants. He and his troops camped out in the Alps, but Hannibal decided to attack Rome directly after a while. After fighting for a bit, Hannibal decides to give up and return to Carthage. Rome sends men to Carthage, and Hannibal is forced to fight. Rome ends up winning this war, as well.
  • The third Punic War was the final war. This was the war in which the Romans completely finished off the Carthaginians. They burned down their city, stole all of the valuable items, sold the survivors as slaves, and spread salt on the ground so that nothing could grow. The Romans won, and the Carthaginians were officially defeated.
  • After winning the Punic Wars, Rome expanded massively. They obtained Sardinia, Corsica, and Sicily, and would easily be able to expand into Northern Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, and Asia Minor.
