  • In the Home of the Students, Equality is called in front of the Council to receive his Life Mandate. When he is told he is a Street Sweeper, he is emotional, but understands why. The book describes, "we felt the cords of our neck grow tight as our head rose higher to look upon the faces of the Council, and we were happy" (Anthem, Ayn Rand, page 26).
  • Chapter 2
  • While Equality 7-2521 and International 4-8818 were finishing up work, they stumbled upon "an iron grill over a black hole" (Anthem, Ayn Rand, page 30). International warns Equality not to go down, but he does anyways.

  • We shall go, nonetheless.

  • When Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 first meet, no words are spoken. Liberty is described as having "no smile on their face, and no welcome" (Anthem, Ayn Rand, page 40). After meeting him, she swiftly turned away.
  • Chapter 4
  • Are you thirsty?
  • Equality flashes back to an encounter he at 10 years old with a man who was burned at the stake for saying the Unspeakable Word. The man was said to be "the calmest and happiest face" (Anthem, Ayn Rand, page 50) in the crowd. As he was burned, Equality thought that the man was trying to tell him something.

  • While experimenting on his own, Equality makes a great discovery. He creates electricity, which he describes as "a new miracle and a new power" (Anthem, Ayn Rand, page 53).
  • We shall bring the water to you.
  • When Equality and Liberty meet again at the hedge, Liberty offers to give him water. This interaction had a lasting impact on them, as Liberty is described "as if they could not turn from us, their arms bent before them, as if they could not lower their hands" (Anthem, Ayn Rand, page 58).
  • Yes, but we cannot cross the hedge.
