  • In book 2, Telemachus calls an assembly and claims that he will go out and find his long lost father Odysseus. He also says that the suitors can't marry his mom but then they say that his mom is stalling and not choosing anyone to marry so the whole house and resource raiding thing was kind of Penelope's fault.

  • In book 5, Hermes visits the Island of Calypso, which was beautiful with thriving plant life. Hermes tells Calypso it's time to let Odysseus leave. Calypso gets mad but after Hermes tells her that Zeus will smite her, she sends Odysseus off on a boat hopefully towards Ithaka
  • The Washing, the Scar, and the Beggar
  • In book 9, Odysseus recalls his events of sailing as we see Zeus create a storm which washes the ship of Odysseus to the land of the lotus eaters. Eating this fruit causes one to lose desire to return home, some men eat the fruit. After dragging them all back to ship, they reach the island of the cyclops and meet Polyphemus. Polyphemus threatens to eat them but Odysseus blinds them and claims the name "nobody". He then makes an unwise decision and reveals his real name and makes Poseidon his enemy.

  • In book 13, Circe tells Odysseus of three major issues in getting home being the song of the Sirens making one lose desire of home, Scylla, devouring one man for each head, and Charybdis, a powerful maelstrom devouring men. Odysseus passes through all of these and asks to be untied during the song of the sirens, he is rejected. After, they reach Helios' island and slaughter cattle which they were not supposed to do. Helios gets mad and Zeus destroys their boat, leaving only Odysseus alive.

  • In book 19, Odysseus (disguised) talks to Penelope and claims he was his host once. He then goes into detail about his own clothing. After this, Penelope insists Eurycleia washes Odysseus' feet. She notices a scar when washing Odysseus, but Odysseus silences them before they can tell Penelope. Odysseus then resumes conversation where Penelope reveals there will be an archery contest among the suitors to marry her.

  • In book 23, Eurycleia reveals that Odysseus was the beggar. Odysseus also tells Telemachus that Ithaka should look like a wedding because people probably shouldn't know Odysseus just killed almost all the suitors. Penelope does not believe them and claims they lost their mind. Penelope tests Odysseus by asking someone to fetch their bed which is when Odysseus says they can't because it is built around an olive tree and his craftsmanship is the only one who could move it. Odysseus then makes sacrifices to be on Poseidon's good side.
