  • Perks Of Being a WallflowerMaximilian Matthews
  • Death effects Everyone differently
  • Deatn affects everyone differently. This is most easily seen in the comparison between Susan’s reaction to Michael’s death, and Charlie’s.
  • Then, I started screaming at the guidance counselor that Michael could have talked to me. AndI started crying even harder.
  • Then I saw her standing in the hall, surrounded by a group of boys I didn’t know…“do you ever miss him?”
  • The setting of the book impacts the theme in many ways. In America in the 1990s, suicide was a lot more normal and commonplace than it is today.
  • This can be seen in the quote “Dave with the awkward glasses told us that Michael killed himself.” This helps show the impact of the time period on death and suicide.
  • The conflict of Perks of Being a Wallflower is character vs. self. Charlie’s main issue and conflict is with himself, and the metaphorical and mental demons he has to fight.
  • This can be seen in the quotes after Charlie’s LSD trip. “ Things were worse an hour ago, and I was looking at this tree but it was a dragon and then a tree, and I remembered that one nice pretty weather day when I was part of the air. And I remem- bered that I mowed the lawn that day for my allowance just like I shovel the driveway for my allow- ance now. So I started shoveling Bob’s driveway, which is a strange thing to do at a New Year’s Eve party really.
  • The theme of death affecting everyone differently is easily found in the end, as Charlie breaks down without his aunt Helen, while the rest of his family gets over her loss, Charlie is drastically changed.
  • “And I just couldn’t talk with Mary Elizabeth or anybody or my brother or anybody in my family. Except maybe my aunt Helen. But she’s gone.”
  • “I just wish that God or my parents or Sam or my sister or someone would just tell me what’s wrong with me. Just tell me how to be different in a way that makes sense. To make this all go away. And disappear.“
