  • Toussaint L'Ouverture was born in Cap-Haitien, Haiti in 1743.
  • This is the country that I learned from my father. He was a free man back there in Africa. I also learned that I was much more than just a slave, that I was a man with brains and dignity. I have the potential to be something more in my life!
  • Upon hearing news of being betrayed by the revolutionaries, people led to widespread mass slave revolts in Saint Dominique.
  • These books will help me to learn how to read and write. I will also ready every book that I can get my hands on.
  • I genuinely admire this French Enlightenment philosopher who wrote this book. He spoke about individual rights and freedom which resonates with me deeply.
  • Although we did not abolish slavery, we extended the "Rights of Man" principles to all French citizens, irrespective of their race, including free Blacks and people of mixed race.
  • This cannot be allowed to happen at all costs. Through the French Revolution, Enlightenment thinkers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau have provoked you moderate revolutionaries into taking the matter of slavery with great importance. We fight against this measure.
  • The revolutionaries could not make slavery come to an end. However, one way or another, slavery should come to an end.
  • Yes, I shall lead the slave rebellion, fighting the French and invading the Spanish and the British.
  • We need to take the Revolution as far as it can go. We also need to consider the issue of "equality". Let's also vote to end slavery in the French colonies.
  • Yes, I can surely do that. I will assist the French army in ejecting the British and the Spanish from France.
  • We have voted to eradicate slavery in the French colonies. We have helped you, and now we need your help. Can you help the French army eject the British and the Spanish?
  • I feel delighted. I also feel very honored to become the de facto governor of the colony.
  • You have proved a brilliant general, winning all 7 battles you fought in just 7 days. With your 7 victories, you are now the de facto governor of our colony! How do you feel?
  • Of course , I agree to these terms of peace.
  • Both Napoleon and Toussaint L'Ouverture agreed to terms of peace.
  • My terms of peace are that if you agree to recognize Haitian independence, I will agree to retire from public life. Napoleon, would you sign the written agreement for terms of peace?
  • Guards, take him away! Arrest him and put him on a ship headed for France. Upon arriving in France, place him in Fort de Joux, a mountain prison in France.
  • This was supposed to be a negotiating meeting with full safe conduct. Instead, you betrayed the safe conduct!
  • You all have been here for a very, very long time. I now declare Haiti, a free republic in the name of the Haitian people.
  • What could the death of one wretched Negro mean to me?
  • Why did you treat Toussaint L'Ouverture dishonorably? Why did you imprison him?
