Section 14(4) of the Labour Relations Act sets out the rights of the shop steward in the workplace.
The Shop Steward has a right to paid time off to perform their duties and attend the necessary training albeit at times the work of a shop steward will be done outside of normal working hours.
Perform any other functions agreed upon by the parties. The Shop Steward needs to be mindful of the fact that they are still an employee and still need to perform the duties they were hired to do unless otherwise stated.
Represent union members during disciplinary or grievance processes. The employer must allow the shop steward to perform their duties when so required and if the shop steward needs to be disciplined that cannot be done without informing the union.
Report any transgression of the Act or any other law or agreement to the employer, a representative trade union, or any other authority.
Monitor the employer's compliance with the Act and any other regulation or agreement.
The Shop Steward is there to ensure the employer does not disregard the agreements made with the union and employees.
A shop steward is an employee elected by their unionised colleagues to represent them in dealings with management.
I have learnt so much from this training about grievance procedures. This will be very helpful for my role as shop steward.
I am so glad management granted us time off to attend this workshop.
I need to log a grievance for sexual harassment but I am afraid no one will take a man seriously about this.
I am sorry you had to experience that but please know that I am here to assist. Sexual harassment effects all genders.
Hello Ma'am, I am a shop steward and here to report my employer for contravening the employment equity act.
Good morning, I am Linda and I am the union manager. Please come to my office so we can discuss your complaint further.
What an informative session!
Hello, may I request a copy of the latest compliance report so I may report back to my union and members.
Of course! Let me call Nokuthula my PA to send you the report as I have already compiled it.
I will be attending a union conference next week, however I will be available on my cell. I will report back upon return.
I called this meeting to inform you I will be away next week.
