Fertilizer runoff is a major reason why nitrates and phosphates build up in the environment.
Eutrophication occurs when there is a too much 'Food' in a body of water.Making algae explode harming the ecosystem
Livestock manure and untreated human waste can also contribute to the problem.
When it rains the ground softens so the animal manure and fertilizer begin to wash away.
The rain causes run off which may go into a river that leads to another body of water.
The extra nutrients cause algae to grow into large algal blooms.
The algal blooms become large and begin to sit at the top of the water
The algal blooms begins to block the sunlight from entering the ocean taking away nutrients which is necessary for
This causes hypoxic and anoxic levels of dissolved oxygen
The lack of oxygen causes animals aquatic life to die off and leaving some to try to escape the dead zone
The algal blooms eventually die off as well
