- The couple communicate differently due to gender. There is tension between the girl and the American, but the girl has more reason to be tense at the time beyond the ethical arguments prevalent to this day, There were also some physical risks to the girl that might be caused by how the abortion would be processed. The abortion wouldn't be done in a hospital and the person doing it might not even be doctor. This brings the possibility of infection.
- The couple seems to communicate with great skill of understanding what they are talnikg about with just a few words. This seen most clearly how they discuss abortion without saying it aloud. They understand each others' implications very well.
- The couple now needs to consider the true nature of their relationship regarding the girl's pregnancy. The girls is unsure whether the American would love her only after the abortion
