  • Rome was a growing republic, and as it gained more power, more threats began to arise, such as the growing empire of Carthage.
  • Carthage was a very wealthy and large empire near Rome. As Carthage expanded, tension grew between them until it became the Punic Wars.
  • The first Punic War was mainly a naval war. Carthage had the advantage due to having an experienced navy, but the Romans were clever. The Romans used grappling hooks to attach to enemies ships and then used a gangplank to cross into the opposing ship, turning a sea battle into a land battle, thus changing the tides of the battle.
  • The second Punic War is the most well known of the three. Hannibal Barca, a Carthaginian general, lead his elephant army through the Alps to attack Rome. After winning several battles, the Carthage’s army was becoming worn down and started to retreat. Seeing this, the Romans send around 30% of their army to attack Carthage. The Romans then lay siege on Carthage and wiped out the city.
  • The third Punic War was caused by the Roman Politition Cato the Elder and his want to wipe Carthage off the map. Although Carthage was virtually destroyed, Rome still went and attacked. They burned the city, took everything of value, sold the population into slavery, and put salt in the land so that nothing would grow there again.
  • After the Punic Wars, Rome gained much more territory, and during the war many farmers neglected their farms and farmland was also destroyed.
