- Here Dee is asking Mama for the quilts but Mama doesn't want to give it to her so she offers her one or two of the others.
- “Can I have these old quilts?”
- “Why don’t you take one or two of the others?”
- *Dee's spirit was shook like a vibration of a bell.*“No,” said Wangero. “I don’t want those. They are stitched around theborders by machine.”“That’ll make them last better,” I said.
- In this scene Dee was shocked that Mama said no to her because Dee always gets what she wants. Mama told her that she promised to give them to Maggie whan she marries John Thomas
- “The truth is,” I said, “I promised to give them quilts to Maggie, for whenshe marries John Thomas.”“The truth is,” I said, “I promised to give them quilts to Maggie, for whenshe marries John Thomas.”
- I always feel degraded in this family.
- “Maggie can’t appreciate these quilts!” she said. “She’d probably be backwardenough to put them to everyday use.”
- Here Dee is trying to convince Mama to give her the quilts by telling her that Maggie will put them to everyday use which is what Mama wants.
- “But they’re priceless!” she was saying now, furiously; for she has a temper. “Maggie would put them on the bed and in five years they’d be in rags. Less than that!”
- “I reckon she would,” I said. “God knows I been saving ’em for long enoughwith nobody using ’em. I hope she will!”
- No, Dee this is unnegotiable.
- These quilts were the only thing I wanted and Mama will give them to Dee.
