  • In chapters: On the Rainy River, Enemies and Friends, Sweetheart of Song Tra Bong, we witness a change in characters' personality and behavior through events.In On the Rainy River, we witness a break through of O'Brien thoughts in the war of his mind: From attempting to escape to Canada to get away from the War, to departing back to home, to Viet Nam, to serve in the war. In Enemies and Friend, we see a progression of the relationship between Lee Strunk and Dave Jensen: From fighting until one has to get choppered for recovery in 2 weeks, and fear of being revenged to learning how to trust each other during the mission. In Sweetheart of Song Tra Bong, we can tell the changes in Mary Anne personality when she first came to Viet Nam and after staying for a long time: From a sweetheart who is full of curiosity and braveness to encounter hardships, has a bright future with her fiance, to a person who acts abnormally and ready for a kill because of the love she has for the land.
  • In chapters: The Things They Carried, The Dentist, Stockings, How to tell a true war story . We have a more comprehensive view into the characters' idiosyncratic through the objects that provoke their reactions and symbolize each character.In The Things They Carried, O'Brien describes the stuff that his comrades carried. They are all varied based on individualities but the pressure and spirits, which are put on their shoulders, are unified.In How to tell a true war story, Rat Kiley wrote a letter to Curt's sister after his death. The letters main talk about the crazy things his brother has crazy attempts and stories which he deemed as personal. However, his sister never replies which left Kiley felt offensive and angry. This detail indicates that Kiley has a strong affection to Curt and makes the authors touched with their brotherhood.In The Dentist, the author recalled of Lemon Curt whom he found difficult to mourn at his comrade's death. O'Brien remembered the time when the Army Dentist came for check ups. Due to childhood fear, Lemon Curt fainted before examination. However the dentist manage to pull off the tooth which made Curt's face beamed with a smile.In Stockings, it talks about how the panty hoes, which he got from his girlfriend, means a lot to him even when their relationship didn't end well.
  • In chapters: Love, Church and Spin. The author was trying to convey that the war has had effects on the characters' future decision even when it ended a while ago.In Love, we read the conversation between O'Brien and Lieutenant Cross in Massachusetts many years later. They were talking about the regrets that Cross still carries about Martha and the death of Ted Lavender. As Cross preparing to leave, he told O'Brien not to write about that death.In Spin, the memories during the war still engraved in O'Brien's mind so much that he mainly wrote about it. He also admitted when his daughter said that is an obsession. From this part, the audiences can tell that the vivid memories may determine the person's thinking or even personality. He tried to write stories about other things; but at the end of the chapter, he wrote about the happy memory, which is still related to the war.In Church, the story occurs when the unit moved to a pagoda where there are 2 monks with little English speaking ability. They spent time living in the pagoda with the monks and seemed to have a good time. The monks actually had a close relationship with Henry Dobbins and helped cleaning his gun machine. After left the pagoda, Dobbins told Kiowa that he might join the pagoda in the future not because of the religious purpose but because he loves being nice to people. This stay has made a change in Dobbins's plan about his future.
