Women's suffrage The Great Gatsby Connection

By: Mykeriah Hall

The traditional roles of women were to basically be in charge of the household care for the family. This consists of cooking, cleaning, taking care of the kids and their husbands, and other chores.

Women's Suffrage/ The Life of a Woman in the 1920s

Women never had time for themselves, and most often felt like they were living for their husbands and not themselves. Women never had time for themselves, and most of them felt like they were living for their husbands and not themselves.

The 19th Admendment!

The 19th Admendment was passed by Congress on June 4, 1919, and was ratified on August 18, 1920. The 19th amendment granted women the right to vote.

Flappers were a group of women in the 1920s that could be described as young, short-haired, wild, dancers, smokers, and drinkers.

Women began to have real jobs and were becoming more unified with men. They also began making more time for themselves.

WHY WONT YOU JUST ACT LIKE A WOMAN!

"The best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”

I chose to base my project off of women’s suffrage because the role of women plays a huge role in the 1920s based novel, ‘The Great Gatsby’. Women originally had strict roles of taking care of the household, and having little to no power. The roles of women changed in the 1920s giving them the freedom and independence that they didn’t once have. Daisy’s commitment to Tom despite his affairs and Myrtle’s relationship with Tom, are both to be the downfall of Gatsby’s American Dream. In Chapter 1 page 16 (pdf version), Daisy made the statement, “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool— that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” This is a powerful statement because it foreshadows the upcoming events involving Tom and Daisy’s marriage and how she carries herself as a woman.

Tom's affairs soon resulted in the death of Myrtle. This caused the destruction of Gatsby's dream, and the ending of his life.
