  • I'm just not like other Greasers.
  • I don't quite fit in with the Socs.
  • My parents don't treat me like parents should treat their son.
  • In chapter 1, we first learn how isolated Ponyboy feels from the rest of the Greasers. He tells us that, "nobody in our gang digs books and movies the way I do," (2) and when describing Steve he explains, "he thought I was a tagalong and a kid," (9). He doesn't feel like he entirely fits in. Pony feels isolated from the Greasers.
  • Sandy's gone and she doesn't love me and I ruined her life!
  • In chapter 3, we learn how Cherry feels a bit different than some of the other Socs. "I don't really think a beer blast on the river bottom is super-cool, but I'll rave about on to a girlfriend just to be saying something," (38).
  • You need to go hide in an abandoned church.
  • When we are introduced to Johnny in chapter 1, we are told that, "His father was always beating him up, and his mother ignored him," (12). Johnny is isolated from his family.
  • I lived on the wild side on New York and got arrested when I was 10, so I go off on my own to break a law when I'm upset.
  • When Sandy was shipped off to Florida, while it does explicitly state it, when Darry says, "I guess she didn't love him like he thought she did, because it wasn't him," (174), it's implied that Sandy got pregnant. Sandy was isolated from society since getting pregnant out of marriage was very disgraceful.
  • After Johnny kills Bob, Dally tells Johnny and Ponyboy to, "Hop the three-fifteen freight...There's an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain," (61). Dally wants the boys to isolate themselves from the world to escape arrest.
  • In chapter 1 when Ponyboy tells us about Dally for the first time, we learn that, "Dally had spent three years of the wild side of New York," (10). This has made him hard and rough, and he goes off alone whenever he's angry. Dally isolates himself from the world sometimes.
