- After several days of travelling the German troops watching the Jews on the train had vanished and the liberators had arrived in the form of Russian soldiers. These Russian soldiers had no time to help the Jews, just told them to steal whatever they needed off the German people. The Children made their way to the nearest settlement where they took the food they needed for survival. During this period Rudi fell in coma. He was found by the Russians who put him into hospital.
- Is there no one who will rid me of this troublesome priest?
- He was eventually transported back to the Netherlands by the Americans. On the journey he and his brother were reunited with their sister Eva. Back in the Netherlands, they showed the British papers of their sister. She was taken by the British army and put into a clean British field hospital. The boys however, were put in a hostel and then another camp (with SS officers and men) as the Dutch decided they were German. From this camp they wrote to Uncle Rudi, who came over to the Netherlands to collect Eva and sort out Visas for the boys and bring them back to Britain. They continued their education in Britain (1945). Rudi was still only 14 years of age.
